TEACHER
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT CHAIR POSITION
Misericordia University’s Teacher Education Department
(TED) is committed to the Mercy values of mercy, justice, service and
hospitality. The usual term of office for
the TED chairperson is three years, with renewal for additional three-year
terms based upon 360-degree evaluation. The Teacher Education Department offers
programs in several areas of Secondary Education, Early Childhood Education,
Elementary Education, Middle School Education, and Special Education, some of
which are at the graduate level. Our
search is open to candidates who have the credentials and experience necessary
to lead a department, who demonstrate strong potential in the area of
scholarship, are committed to service learning and strengthening partnerships
with local school districts, and possess an expertise in the area of curriculum
development. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise related to
reading and/or middle school education.
Duties
of the department chair include, but are not limited to, administering the
budgeting process, preparing the schedule of classes, making catalog revisions,
hiring and retaining full-time and adjunct faculty, overseeing textbook
ordering, scheduling department meetings, inputting and monitoring Title II
data, and preparing annual reports. The
TED department chair is a full-time, twelve-month, tenure-track faculty
position with requirements to teach twelve credits per year and to advise education
majors.
The
selected candidate must hold a doctoral degree and will be required to have
substantial experience that indicates the ability to effectively lead a
Department at the higher education level that prepares students for elementary,
middle school and secondary teaching, and that offers graduate programs for
practicing educators. The successful candidate should also be familiar with the
new Pennsylvania Certification Regulations (Chapter 49-2) and NCATE. The person
selected, should he or she not continue as department chair at the end of a
three-year term, would continue as a tenure track nine and one-half month
faculty member assuming a full teaching load (twelve credits per semester)
within the department and be expected to meet the requirements of a faculty
member set forth in the Faculty Handbook. The contract salary for a person
moving from a twelve-month position to a nine and one-half month position is
