The University:          Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) is a state supported institution located in the northwest section of Chicago. It is located eight miles from downtown Chicago and twenty minutes from O’Hare International Airport. The university enrolls 12,000 commuter students. Northeastern Illinois University has been ranked as the most diverse university in the Midwest for several years by U. S. News and World Report and is a designated Hispanic Serving Institution.

 

The Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) is the south side campus of Northeastern Illinois University located in the historic Bronzeville community. The Carruthers Center boasts lake and city views and is minutes from the lake front and downtown Chicago.

 

Department:              The Academic Program of Inner City Studies Education (ICSE) is part of the Department of Educational Leadership and Development and is offered at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies. The curricula in Inner City Studies Education focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to examining the political, economic, social, and cultural forces that impact on inner city communities in this country and throughout the world. The Program has established, as its primary function, the training of inner city career persons who desire to work in inner city communities. The ICSE Program, through the College of Education, offers a Minor in Inner City Careers, Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Inner City Studies Education.  

 

Qualifications:

Required                    The successful candidate for the tenure track position in ICSE must have an earned doctorate in African American Studies or an area of liberal arts

(e.g. history, literature, sociology,) with a specialty in urban studies.  Also required: demonstrated expertise in African centered pedagogy as it relates to inner city life, institutions, and the historical forces that impact on inner city / urban communities; experience in the development of programs and curricula aimed at improving the delivery of services in public and private human and social service and educational institutions; and ability to use technology to enhance teaching.

Recommended:          Experience working in urban communities; prior teaching at the university level and an agenda for scholarly activity that includes publications and/or presentations at the state or national level, and a focus on global issues.
