Department: The Department of Reading at Northeastern Illinois University
prepares individuals to assume leadership roles in literacy instruction in
diverse school settings. The department offers a Master of Arts Degree in
Reading leading to Type 10 Reading Specialist Certification as described by the
State of Illinois Board of Education. The program is designed to meet the need
for informed and skills reading specialists at the elementary, middle, and
secondary levels. The College of Education is fully accredited by NCATE, and
the reading program is approved by the Illinois State board of Education and
the International Reading Association.
Qualifications: Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Reading/Literacy Education as well as a background in Literacy Instruction, especially as it relates to English-language learners. Teaching experience in K-12 classrooms preferred. Candidate should provide evidence of successful relevant K-12 teaching experience, competency in instructional technology, commitment to culturally diverse and inclusive settings, ability to work collaboratively, commitment to literacy education, experience in curriculum development, and potential for scholarly contribution.
Responsibilities: Responsibilities include teaching evening graduate courses as well as the possibility of teaching some undergraduate courses in literacy methodology. Candidates are also expected to collaborate with colleagues in design and implementation of innovative programs, engage in graduate student advising, to participate in research and university/community service. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to collaboration, working in diverse setting, and preparing instructional leaders in literacy.
