The Technology in Teaching and Learning SIG examines current issues, shares research and provides a forum for discussion. Presentations on technology in teaching and learning at K-12 and a university setting are presented at the annual ATE meeting.

ATE's Commission on Technology and the Future of Teacher Education has collected these resources from organizations that play a key role in infusing technology with teacher education.  The list was purposefully compiled from a broad perspective and includes both national and international sources. Commission members supplied the descriptions.  They are listed in alphabetical order. The commission welcomes suggestions.

British Educational Communications and Technology Agency


The Continuing Professional Development web page of the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA) has a wide range of useful research and resources. In addition, preservice teacher education (often known as initial teacher training in the UK) has further resources.

Please note that "ICT" (Information and Communications Technology) is commonly used internationally, whereas "educational technology" is more commonly used in the US.

CARET (Center for Applied Research in Educational Technology) 
This ISTE-sponsored site summarizes what research currently says about the impact of technology on learning and under what conditions learning results are optimized. The site points to overall findings and to the specific studies on which these conclusions are based.

This site provides access to a set of portals providing free professional development content across an array of dimensions in education. The portals address such topics as digital equity, urban education reform, professional development school partnerships, best practices in staff development, educational equity, and early literacy.

ETIPS cases present free web-based, interactive, multimedia, digital learning resources that develop instructional decision-making skills and are also readily integrated into a variety of teacher education courses. The cases enable preservice teachers to respond to a realistic, complex case situation and allow faculty to unobtrusively assess their students' understanding.

Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE)


Calculus, math research, physics, earth and environmental sciences, Walt Whitman, Islamic manuscripts from Mali, and the history of Western music are among the topics of 13 new resources at FREE, the website that makes teaching resources from federal agencies easier to find.

International Society for Technology in Education

ISTE, International Society for Technology in Education

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) is a nonprofit professional organization with a worldwide membership of leaders and potential leaders in educational technology. They are dedicated to providing leadership and service to improve teaching and learning by advancing the effective use of technology in K-12 education and teacher education.

Their resources are substantial. They publish several books, recently 101 Best Websites for Secondary Teachers, and another for ...Elementary Teachers.  They sponsor many events, including the annual National Educational Computer Conference (NECC). Their refereed journal, Learning & Leading with Technology is available online in a net-friendly format.

ISTENETS, ISTE National Educational Technology Standards

ISTE also led in the development of the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for students, teachers, and administrators. The standards were established with the cooperation of a host of teachers, professors, agencies, and curriculum experts. The project is ongoing and standards are continually evaluated. Besides the standards themselves, each area also includes resources, sample lesson plans, profiles, and related information. The standards for Teachers were incorporated into the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) criteria for program approval.

NICI Virtual Library
This nonprofit international co-operative provides low cost access (discounted to $10 per year for ATE members) for unlimited searching and downloading) for educators and learners to a vast array of instructional and professional development resources across the K16 and graduate curriculum. Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology

Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology (PT3) is a federal grant program that has been ongoing since 1999. The purpose is to develop future teachers who know how to use modern learning technologies to improve student learning is a major challenge facing our nation's teacher preparation system. PT3 grants support innovative program improvements to prepare technology-proficient educators for 21st century schools.
The website has abstracts on all grants, and links to each website.  Additionally, there are resources from the National Council on Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), 21st century learners, a technology and change bibliography, and you can also sign up for an emailed newsletter.

Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education

The Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education (SITE) is an international association of individual teacher educators, and affiliated organizations of teacher educators in all disciplines, who are interested in the creation and dissemination of knowledge about the use of information technology in teacher education and faculty/staff development. It is affiliated with the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE)

The Society publishes two refereed journals Journal of Technology and Teacher Education (JTATE) and  Contemporary Issues in Technology & Teacher Education (CITE).  The journals are searchable and abstracts are freely available. However, membership is required to download the full-text of the article.

Technology, Pedagogy and Education is a fully-refereed international journal concerned with supporting educators in the integration of information technology in the teaching and learning process. Contributions are published in the form of original theoretical works, research reports, literature reviews, software and book reviews, conference reports, and announcements about the development of information technology theory and practice in teacher education. The journal is published in the UK on paper. All abstracts are available online, but the current year's papers are only available to subscribers.
